Clara Berta’s The Depth of the Ocean (2025), part of her Ethereal / Ocean Studies series, is a 42 x 52 inch acrylic and mixed media canvas that embodies water as a symbol of healing, renewal, and intuitive control. Inspired by the thermal springs of her Hungarian heritage, the work emerges from a search for structure amidst chaos, becoming a monument to inner peace found through surrender to the unknown. Beginning with a stark white ground that acts as a resonant silence, Berta pours and tilts pigment rather than using brushes, allowing elemental forces to guide the unfolding form. Deep indigos and textured blacks evoke the crushing pressure and mystery of the ocean’s depths, while transparent layers and mixed media textures invite viewers to look beyond the surface into currents of purification and release. The composition balances freedom with intention, revealing that true artistic liberation lies not in abandoning effort, but in mastering the art of letting go, resulting in a powerful, contemplative, and beautifully ordered final form.
